Former President Donald Trump expressed a desire to fire Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell during a speech at the U.S. Saudi Investment Forum in Washington, D.C. Trump criticized Powell for not taking action to lower national interest rates, stating, “I’d love to fire his a**.”

Trump noted that Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is hindering his ability to make such a decision, indicating frustration over the current interest rates. He mentioned that if the situation does not improve, he would consider dismissing Bessent as well.

Trump’s Critique of Federal Reserve Policies

During his remarks, Trump asserted that the high interest rates are problematic, saying, “The rates are too high, Scott, and if you don’t get it fixed fast, I’m gonna fire your a**.” Bessent is reportedly involved in discussions regarding Powell’s potential replacement.

Despite Trump’s pressures, the Federal Reserve chose not to lower interest rates in its recent meetings. Officials are concerned that reducing rates might exacerbate inflation risks as the economy faces rising prices and a declining labor market.

Context on Interest Rates and Economic Concerns

The Federal Reserve’s decision against cutting interest rates aligns with its broader concerns about maintaining economic stability. Economists have debated the potential impacts of adjusting rates, particularly in light of inflation and labor market conditions.

Trump’s comments highlight the tension between presidential ambitions and the independent nature of the Federal Reserve, which is tasked with controlling monetary policy without political interference.
