Democratic Representative Eric Swalwell has announced his candidacy for the governorship of California in the upcoming 2026 election. Swalwell, a vocal critic of the Trump administration, revealed his plans on his official campaign website on Thursday prior to an appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” where he received a standing ovation from the audience.
During his appearance, Swalwell emphasized the need for strong leadership in California. He stated, “Our state, this great state, needs a fighter and a protector.” He highlighted his experience in various roles, including his tenure as a city council member in Dublin, a prosecutor in Oakland, and his position in Congress.
Field of Candidates
Swalwell, who is 45 years old, enters a competitive race with several high-profile candidates. Governor Gavin Newsom is unable to seek reelection due to term limits under California law. Among the other Democratic contenders are former Secretary of Health and Human Services Xavier Becerra, former Representative Katie Porter, former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, and entrepreneur Tom Steyer. Republican challengers include political pundit Steve Hilton and Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco.
Swalwell currently represents California’s 14th Congressional District, which covers a significant part of the East Bay. He has served in the U.S. House of Representatives since 2013 and previously worked as a prosecutor for Alameda County. Swalwell garnered national attention during his 2020 presidential campaign, focusing on issues such as gun control.
Legal Challenges and Controversies
In addition to his gubernatorial campaign, Swalwell is facing a potential federal investigation. Federal Housing Finance Agency Director Bill Pulte referred Swalwell to the Justice Department concerning alleged tax and mortgage fraud. Swalwell has denied any wrongdoing, expressing surprise that the investigation came so late.
Swalwell has had a contentious relationship with the Trump administration, describing himself as a significant critic of the former president. He served as one of the impeachment managers during Trump’s second impeachment trial and is involved in a lawsuit alleging Trump’s actions contributed to the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. He also voiced skepticism about the full release of documents related to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
