Amanda Seyfried, star of Mamma Mia!, recently provided an update regarding the potential third installment of the film series, indicating that it may be a “done deal.”
The original film, released in 2008, was a significant box office success, featuring a cast that included Seyfried, Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Christine Baranski, Julie Walters, Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgård, and Dominic Cooper.

The sequel, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again!, released in 2018, served as both a prequel and a sequel, encapsulating different timelines. Despite some narrative inconsistencies with the first film, the sequel grossed approximately $402 million worldwide.
There has been ongoing interest in the continuation of the franchise, with both Streep and Seyfried offering updates over the past year. Producer Judy Craymer mentioned in 2023 that a script for the third film was in early development, expressing hopes that Streep would reprise her role.
During an appearance at the Governor Awards, Seyfried stated her belief that Mamma Mia! 3 is a “done deal.” She also expressed her desire to explore Sophie’s experiences as a mother in the new installment.
Seyfried has previously supported the idea of Sabrina Carpenter taking on the role of Sophie’s daughter. In the conclusion of Here We Go Again!, Sophie welcomed a baby boy named Donny.
In discussing potential plot points for the third film, Seyfried suggested possible family dynamics, including the introduction of a cousin. She noted that several actresses are interested in participating, indicating her support for this idea.
Seyfried also hinted at familiar elements returning, including the three fathers and the presence of Streep’s character in a ghostly form. She assured fans that the beloved musical elements will remain, confirming that ABBA’s music will be featured.
However, the prospect of Sydney Sweeney joining the cast has raised concerns among fans due to recent controversies surrounding her. Discussions on social media have seen calls for petitions to prevent her involvement in the project, reflecting mixed sentiments among the audience.
Amidst her recent work, including the biopic Christy, Sweeney has faced scrutiny related to an advertisement for American Eagle jeans, which generated backlash for its perceived problematic messages.
In response to public criticism, Sweeney expressed surprise but chose not to engage deeply, stating that she would address significant issues when she felt it necessary.
