President Donald Trump has called for the execution of six Democratic congressmembers, all of whom have served in the U.S. military or intelligence community. This follows their release of a video urging military personnel to refuse participation in illegal actions directed by Trump.
In a social media post, Trump described their actions as “SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!” He also shared a message suggesting the execution of the congressmembers, stating that George Washington would support such actions.
Congressmembers’ Video Response
The video made by the congressmembers advocates for military personnel to uphold their legal obligations and the U.S. Constitution. Despite Trump’s assertion, legal sources indicate that the content of the video does not constitute sedition or treason under federal law.
In light of Trump’s remarks, congressional Democrats have urged the President to retract his comments and denounce his “dangerous” suggestions, citing concerns that his rhetoric could incite violence against the congressmembers.
Reactions from Trump’s Administration
Responding to the backlash, Trump’s Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that Trump did not explicitly call for the deaths of the congressmembers. Instead, she emphasized that Trump seeks accountability from legislators who encourage military personnel to defy orders from their superiors.
Critics have raised concerns over the implications of Trump’s previous actions, including his authorization of extrajudicial operations, underscoring a perception that he might not prioritize the legality of military commands.
