FBI Director Kash Patel is facing renewed scrutiny over his use of government aircraft for personal travel, including a recent trip to attend a wrestling event where his girlfriend, country singer Alexis Wilkins, performed. Critics argue that Patel’s actions contradict his previous calls for fiscal responsibility and raise questions about the appropriate use of taxpayer-funded resources.

Patel’s Controversial Travel Patterns

Kash Patel, who assumed the role of FBI Director in February 2025, has been accused of using FBI jets for personal reasons, including trips to Nashville, Las Vegas, and New York. Flight logs and public records show that Patel has taken multiple flights on government-owned Gulfstream and Boeing aircraft, often to destinations where his girlfriend, Alexis Wilkins, resides or performs.

One of the most recent incidents involved Patel flying to State College, Pennsylvania, to attend the Real American Freestyle wrestling event, where Wilkins performed. The government jet landed at State College Regional Airport on October 25, 2025, and later flew to Nashville, Wilkins’ hometown. This has sparked criticism from former FBI agents and lawmakers, who argue that such travel is inappropriate, especially during a government shutdown when many federal employees are not being paid.

Hypocrisy and Public Backlash

Patel’s use of government jets is particularly controversial because he was once a vocal critic of his predecessor, Christopher Wray, for similar behavior. In 2023, Patel called for grounding Wray’s private jet, accusing him of “jetting off on taxpayer dollars while dodging accountability for the implosion of the FBI on his watch.” Now, Patel himself is being accused of the same conduct, leading to accusations of hypocrisy and misuse of taxpayer funds.

Lawmakers, including Senator Peter Welch (D-VT), have demanded answers about Patel’s travel, questioning whether the use of government aircraft for personal reasons aligns with the Trump administration’s stated commitment to rooting out government waste. The FBI has declined to comment on Patel’s travel arrangements, citing security reasons, but has stated that all ethical guidelines are followed rigorously.

The Policy and Reimbursement Rules

FBI directors are required by executive branch policy to use government aircraft for all travel, both official and personal, to ensure secure communications and rapid response capabilities. However, when travel is for personal reasons, the director must reimburse the government for the cost of a commercial coach ticket. Critics argue that this reimbursement does not cover the full cost of operating the government jet, which can run into thousands of dollars per flight.

Some former FBI officials have expressed concern that the frequent use of government aircraft for personal travel could take critical resources offline when they are needed for operational missions. They also worry that such behavior sets a poor leadership example, as regular FBI agents are not allowed to use government vehicles for personal use.

Alexis Wilkins: Country Singer and Public Figure

Alexis Wilkins, Patel’s girlfriend, is a 26-year-old country singer from Nashville, Tennessee. She has gained recognition for her music, which blends traditional country values with contemporary themes. Wilkins has performed at various venues and has been featured in several country music publications. Her relationship with Patel has drawn additional attention, particularly as it intersects with his official duties and travel.
