The event took place at the American Federation of Teachers headquarters amidst increasing political hostility faced by LGBTQ+ individuals. Former Congressman Barney Frank, a prominent figure in the LGBTQ+ rights movement, made a rare public appearance to honor a friend from his congressional days.
The honoree for this year was Congresswoman Maxine Waters, a California Democrat, who received the PFLAG National Champion of Justice Award. This recognition places Waters among notable past recipients, including the late Congressman John Lewis and Senator Tammy Baldwin, highlighting her contributions to civil rights.
Political Climate and Advocacy Efforts
This year’s reception occurred against a backdrop of heightened political tensions, with speakers referencing the policies of the second Trump administration and the resulting anxieties within families and educational institutions. PFLAG National Board Chair Edith Guffey addressed the audience as a mother of a nonbinary child, expressing her concern for LGBTQ+ youth navigating challenging circumstances. She reiterated PFLAG’s commitment to providing support, education, and advocacy for families dealing with fear and misinformation.
Frank described Waters as a pivotal ally in the fight against bigotry, noting her role in maintaining solidarity within the LGBTQ+ community. The event culminated with Bond encouraging attendees to continue their advocacy as they face the upcoming elections, emphasizing PFLAG’s dedication to combating discrimination at all levels of government.
